Michael Rosenbaum explica por qué dejó Smallville cuando todavía podía continuar

En 2006, Michael Rosenbaum began a compromise that ended up lasting seven seasons: his contract for Smallville originally covered only six. After fulfilling that commitment, the actor agreed to extend his participation for one more year, but when the seventh season finished he decided not to renew, even though he still had the option to do so.

Looking back on that moment, Rosenbaum said he was prepared to move forward and take a new professional step. For an actor who had spent several years embodying Lex Luthor, the future nemesis of Superman, staying in the same role no longer offered the same challenge. His aim was to explore other possibilities and continue growing as a performer.

La partida de los creadores

Rosenbaum also identified a second reason, connected to the series' creative direction: Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the show's original creators, left the project when the seventh season ended. The actor addressed the issue on his podcast Inside of You, explaining that the departure of the people who had shaped the series made the end of that stage feel especially natural.

The following season brought clear changes. Kristin Kreuk and Laura Vandervoort also left the production, Oliver Queen gained a more prominent place in the story, and new characters such as Tess Mercer and Davis Bloome appeared. What had begun as a young-adult drama set in Clark Kent's hometown gradually shifted its focus toward Metropolis and the hero's future life.

“I was ready to move on and take a new step.”Michael Rosenbaum

Rosenbaum did return for the series finale, so his departure did not mean an immediate end to his connection with Smallville. However, he turned down the crossover Crisis in Infinite Earths. The reason he gave was direct: he did not want to share scenes with alternate versions of Lex Luthor and argued that only one Lex belonged in that story.

“There is only room for one Lex. If you are going to tell a multiverse story, I do not want to be with other Lexes.”Michael Rosenbaum

After leaving Smallville, the actor worked in television, film and video games. He appeared in Impastor and in the final two installments of The Guardians of the Galaxy. He also lent his voice to Flash in DC animated productions. More recently, Rosenbaum mentioned the possibility of an animated continuation of Smallville with Tom Welling and the original creators, noting that much of the cast would be willing to return in voice roles, although the project has no announced date.

When I think about Rosenbaum's departure, I cannot see it only as the end of a contract. It was the closing of a stage for a performer who had made Lex Luthor one of his defining roles. I feel that his decision to leave also left a particular emptiness in the series' early identity, while his eventual return for the finale offered viewers a moment of reunion.
